DISTANCE LEARNING: REVOLUTIONIZING EDUCATION

6 Minuten

Distance learning is an educational process where instructors and learners are separated spatially and/or even temporally, potentially utilizing different technologies. What initially sounds like a new Christopher Nolan film, where weeks later one is still desperately trying to figure out what they actually watched for three hours, is not nearly as complex in reality. Unlike the traditional format, where learning typically takes place in a classroom, distance learning utilizes various technologies & opportunities to deliver learning content and facilitate mutual exchange.

The origins of distance learning can be traced back to the 19th century. At that time, courses were offered by mail. This early form of distance education made learning accessible even to people in the most remote areas. From today’s perspective, this is, of course, unimaginable. If today’s logistics providers were primarily responsible for education, a significant upheaval would likely be anticipated, to say the least. This is likely also why distance learning had to evolve. The use of new technologies such as radio, television, and later the internet led to a revolution in distance education. Today, DIGITAL EMPLOYEE TRAINING particularly dominates the field.

EFFECTIVE LEARNING EVEN AT A DISTANCE? IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?

We can well imagine what you are thinking right now:

But dear Swiss, how is distance learning supposed to work? Won’t our employees simply open their laptops for attendance checks, only to then initiate the long-overdue spring cleaning?

We understand your skepticism regarding distance learning. Truly! To be honest, I am currently writing this text while the dishwasher hums next door and my young son enthusiastically throws his wooden toy at my ankle. However, with the right approaches and the right system on your side, none of this presents a problem. Through the application of suitable methods, your employees are specifically and continuously motivated to achieve peak performance – even when spatial and temporal distance prevails.

Didactic Challenges and Adaptations in Distance Learning

Distance learning requires specific didactic approaches to effectively reach and engage learners. Instructors must adapt their methods to ensure effective knowledge transfer. The overhead projector is no longer sufficient, if it ever truly was. It requires interactive elements such as discussion forums, group projects, and interactive or gamified tasks to motivate learners and foster EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT in distance learning.

Utilizing the Right LMS

With the right system at hand, your employees are consciously supported, challenged, and motivated to learn effectively even remotely. For instance, by integrating gamification elements or tracking learning progress, continuous impulses are set that drive employees forward. And who could offer you precisely such a system? That’s right – the Swiss! Our LMS GLOBAL TEACH®, developed over years with an understanding of the challenges of remote learning in E-LEARNING FOR COMPANIES, offers you everything essential for effective and efficient remote learning. All of this, of course, is complemented by our experts, who are passionately available to answer all your questions throughout the process. We would even go so far as to offer our GLOBAL TEACH® to the DFB as Julian Nagelsmann’s successor – a bit of spirit and increased willingness to learn in the team can never hurt. … One LMS. There is only one LMS. One LMS. There is only one LMS.

ADVANTAGES AND CRITICISMS OF DISTANCE LEARNING

Distance learning offers your company numerous advantages:

Flexibility and Accessibility for Diverse Learners: Distance learning offers high flexibility and can appeal to individuals with diverse needs and life circumstances.

Location-Independent Learning: E-learning enables instructors and learners to teach and learn regardless of their geographical location. Do your employees love being able to carry out their tasks even on the beach? With distance learning, that’s no problem! Work during the day – take the kids for a stroll through Barcelona in the evening.

Time-Independent Learning: Distance learning offers the opportunity to access learning content at any time and determine one’s own learning pace. This allows learners to customize their learning plan, which is particularly useful for managing various work tasks.

Connected Work: In distance learning, learners can access a variety of knowledge sources at any time and integrate them into their learning process. This eliminates the need to physically go to a library, and your employees can be as loud as they want.

At this point, we do not wish to conceal that there are also critical voices regarding distance learning. For instance, its effectiveness compared to in-person instruction is frequently discussed, particularly concerning the conveyance of complex subject matter. Furthermore, a lack of social interaction, which complicates team building, is also often criticized. We do not view this criticism of distance learning as a critique of the system itself, but rather as an indication of problematic implementation. Through the pedagogical methods demonstrated and an effectively aligned LMS, these disadvantages are overcome. Just like in school, it is the instructor and their ‘system’ that determined how well the content was conveyed. And we all know how often that went wrong…

Instead of denying it, we should accept that the world continues to evolve, and distance learning, for good reason, represents the future of learning. Let us welcome these innovations and harness their incredible potential. The future of distance learning could be shaped by advancing technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and adaptive learning systems. Thus, it holds the potential to positively and sustainably influence the educational landscape and improve it through novel technologies. We should actively co-create this and achieve the optimal system for individual needs. And that is precisely what we at SWISSTEACH are here for!

Designated HR staff organise most of the administrative tasks (e.g. invitations to participants, reservations for rooms and the necessary infrastructure or other resources). Parts of the process are partially automated.
A software system automates numerous actions. However, there are still numerous manual organisational tasks that require specific employees to take action for the final organisation.
We already have a (learning management) system that supports us with the organisational tasks required for training. There are still a few organisational tasks that have to be carried out manually by a very small number of employees and with only a manageable amount of effort.
