GAMIFICATION IN THE LMS

6 Minuten

I’m Max, a trainee in Business Development—and to be honest, I didn’t expect gamification in an LMS when I started my career. Up until then, I’d only known learning platforms as digital folders for PDFs and multiple-choice tests. So naturally, I was a bit sceptical about our company’s own Learning Management System.

My first LMS experience was exactly what I’d feared: mandatory modules, checklists, and no clear direction. I clicked my way through without knowing if I’d learned anything, and felt more monitored than supported.

Then came the surprise: the company had chosen GLOBAL TEACH® by Swissteach—a system with real gamification elements. Points, badges, learning quests? My first thought was, ‘Do I really need this?’ followed by: ‘This might be better than I thought.’

WHAT IS GAMIFICATION?

Like many others, my first image was one of points, colourful stars, and virtual trophies – just playful extras. But it quickly became clear: gamification isn’t a decorative add-on, but a methodological approach based on psychological principles.

With clear objectives, immediate feedback and a visible sense of progress, the learning experience felt completely different. You’re no longer just presented with content – you find your own learning path. Suddenly, I knew where I stood, what I had already achieved, and what was coming next. It’s not about turning learning into a game. It’s about making it tangible and motivating.

What impressed me most was how GLOBAL TEACH® put this into practice. The gamification isn’t superficial; it’s thoughtfully integrated. It supports learning rather than distracting from it.

THESE GAMIFICATION ELEMENTS IN THE LMS REALLY HELPED ME

A real game changer for me was the visible progress. It sounds simple, but seeing something fill up is incredibly motivating. Other gamification elements also genuinely supported my learning:

  • Badges for completed learning goals: small visual rewards that motivate and provide orientation
  • Learning quests: short, targeted tasks that give structure to my learning process
  • Time-limited quizzes: not too long, but challenging—just right for short, focused learning sessions
  • Team challenges: learning together with others, encouraging exchange and strengthening the social aspect

These features redefined learning for me. GLOBAL TEACH® integrated them exactly where they made sense—not as gimmicks, but as an essential part of a motivating learning environment.

HOW GAMIFICATION CHANGED THE LMS – AND MY LEARNING WITH IT

I used to ‘work through’ content. Now, I experience it. These days, I access the LMS regularly—even outside of scheduled learning phases. Why? Because I enjoy it. Because I know I can make progress in just a few minutes. Because I can see myself improving.

Collecting points might sound trivial, but it has an impact on me. It creates momentum. And the best part? If I need to pause, there’s no pressure—I just pick up where I left off. My learning journey isn’t linear, but it’s active. And that makes a huge difference.

WHERE DOES GAMIFICATION REALLY FLOURISH IN E-LEARNING?

I see the greatest strengths in the areas that were previously hardest to get across: onboarding and mandatory training. Gamified learning paths have completely restructured our onboarding—no longer dry, but modular, interactive and repeatable. New colleagues find their way around faster and stay motivated.

Even compliance topics, which used to be real obstacles, are now delivered through learning challenges, with short modules, real-life use cases, and feedback after every step. The gamification features in GLOBAL TEACH® can be flexibly adapted—depending on the E-LEARNING CONTENT, target audience, and learning objectives.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK STRAIGHT AWAY

Of course, not everything went perfectly. At first, many were overwhelmed by the flood of new features. Some thought the points and badges were just silly. There was uncertainty, resistance—and a few early technical teething problems.

What helped? Listening. We gathered feedback and clearly explained why we were doing this. Swissteach supported us closely throughout the process. It wasn’t just about what’s possible, but also about how to use it in a meaningful way.

CONCLUSION: I’M LEARNING MORE – AND ENJOYING IT FAR MORE

The content hasn’t changed—but my whole approach has. With gamification, learning no longer feels like a duty, it feels like growth. I feel like I’m making progress and actively shaping my journey. And that changes everything.

GLOBAL TEACH® showed me that E-LEARNING can be more than just a digital training folder. The platform motivates, supports, and reflects—without being intrusive. I can see changes in how my colleagues approach learning too. There’s a completely different attitude towards development now. And it doesn’t come from the top – it comes from within.

BUILDING A GENUINE LEARNING CULTURE THROUGH GAMIFICATION

Looking back on my first few months, I realise how much my approach to learning has changed. It’s not because of new content, but because of a different way of experiencing it. Gamification gave me structure, made progress visible, and created motivation without adding pressure.

This is especially helpful for new employees. Instead of slogging through dry modules, we experience learning as something that can be enjoyable – and still be taken seriously. GLOBAL TEACH® provides the right platform for this, and Swissteach understands how to turn features into real learning experiences.

A software system automates numerous actions. However, there are still numerous manual organisational tasks that require specific employees to take action for the final organisation.
